An anxiety or panic attack is part of what is medically known as anxiety disorder. Like its name, it comes without warning and can never be explained. Anxiety or panic attacks are part of a more serious medical condition often grouped as panic disorder. This disorder includes other anti-social behavior like obsessive-compulsive behavior and phobias, although phobias on their own do not necessarily mean the person is suffering from panic disorder. Anxiety attacks are best described as sudden feeling of intense fear. The sufferer becomes so afraid to even move from the very spot they are standing on because the fear makes them believe that doing so will bring danger to them.

Anxiety attack treatments range from the medical to the holistic. Medical methods include:

- Prescription pills and antidepressants. Such medications for panic disorder have to be given out by a doctor after a thorough investigation.

- For the more severe cases of anxiety attacks, intravenous shots may have to be prescribed on a periodic basis; for example once every three months.

- Counseling sessions

- Psychotherapy. This includes heavy one-to-one discussions with an experienced psychologist or psychiatrist. These normally deal with previous life experiences that may reveal triggers for such anxiety attacks.

Holistic methods are less intrusive and are usually preferred for sufferers who want to be more hands-on when it comes to managing their own anxiety levels. These methods include:

- Meditation. Many people swear by the practice of going "within oneself" to find true peace and control. For many, the activation of the Third Brain (when the right and left hemispheres of the brain are in total balance) solves many mysterious ailments, including anxiety attacks.

- Yoga. Like meditation, yoga is a quieter version of physical exercise where getting into a particular posture requires concentrated effort and focus. Yoga practitioners believe that the act of focusing on getting into a particular pose helps to balance the mind and brings peace.

- Lifestyle change. Sometimes, a change in lifestyle can act as a catalyst to rid the sufferer of any anxiety attacks. However, this may work only for those with milder symptoms of panic disorder. Changes in lifestyle include getting enough rest, more exercise and finding effective ways to distress.

- Aromatherapy. Somewhat related to the concept of meditation, aromatherapy promotes the use of the senses to evoke feelings of calm and control. Just like yoga and meditation, aromatherapy believes that once the soul is "appeased", most physical ailments will disappear or receded on their own.

Whichever method chosen to treat anxiety attacks will depend a lot on the culture and environment the patient is in. Most people brought up in the Eastern tend towards less medical ways of getting cured. These ways include even the more unconventional acts of exorcism, believing that these attacks are of spiritual origin.

While these may be scorned at and even looked down upon by those with a more Western upbringing, modern society is beginning to embrace holistic approaches to treatment of physical ailments exorcism aside. Today, it is neither strange nor uncommon to find the use of scented oils and incense as part of treatment for panic disorder. Signs of such approaches becoming acceptable is evident in the fact that words and phrases like "Ayurveda" and "chi" are used more often in general conversation.

It also has to be understood that anxiety attack treatments differ from one individual to another, even though both may seem to show similar levels of severity. Just because two persons are experiencing panic attacks does not mean they can be treated the same way. Doctors may recommend prescriptive medicine for one while the other may require intensive dialogue sessions with a qualified psychotherapist. The type of treatment to be given to any one sufferer is influenced by a few factors, other than just the symptoms and frequency of anxiety attacks.

One of the biggest factors that determine the type of treatment for any anxiety attack patient is the trigger. Someone who experiences panic disorder as a result of personal trauma, for instance, will need to be treated differently from someone who has it because of an abusive past.
