In Rao's Summer Break, Indian children do answer and argue with parents they do lie, and yes! Make mistakes, repent, and are also vindictive! Rao succeeds in challenging stereotypes of Indian children held by the West. Her characters lie, commit blunders, argue and fight with elders, and disobey elders! And it is realistic! Summer Break reflects changing India! The novel does not preach or state but shows, and helps a reader realize the value of family and friends no matter what you can always count on family.
