A typical day in the life of the former White House director of the Office of Management and Budget is actually anything but typical. While you might wake up at 7 a.m. and immediately hit the snooze button, Orszag is off and running, literally. He takes a 35 minute run at 6 in the morning, almost every morning. Immediately after his run he hits the showers and is off to work but not before his daily stop at Starbucks. At Starbucks Orszag loads up on a variety of iced and hot tea, don't worry Peter insisted on being genetically tested to confirm the fact that his body can metabolize a large amount of caffeine.
Next Orszag arrives at his job, where at? Oh, just at the White House where he is the youngest member of President Obama's cabinet at 40 years of age. Being the youngest member doesn't have anything to do with the amount of experience Orszag has gathered over the years. With a Ph.D. in Economics from the London School of Economics and experience in a variety of positions that have prepared him for this job, Peter Orszag seems ready to take on the world and in fact he does, well the country's federal deficit anyway, but to many that might seem like the biggest issue facing the U.S. government today.
Besides coming up with solutions to reduce the federal deficit Orszag is also well-versed in a variety of other areas including health-care reform and Social Security modifications and doesn't take these responsibilities lightly. Orszag has hired a variety of policy heavyweights after taking on the position in the Office on Management and Budget and has helped persuade cabinet secretaries to let him and his team help shape their plans.
Throughout a vast array of duties, Orszag's main job is to help guide the nation's budget through congress and help lower the federal deficit by calling on a variety of tasks such as cutting government programs and excess spending. Orszag draws on his experience on Capitol Hill and the relationships he has built there. "He's made nerdy sexy," says Rahm Emanuel, the White House chief of staff.
It seems like Peter Orszag was made for this position, considering it runs in his family. His brothers Michael and Jonathon Orszag are also economists and to this day Peter and his brothers compare their grade-point averages from Princeton University.
Although Orszag's position is undoubtedly stressful he still has time to have fun and constantly refers to himself as "super nerd."
