A Day in the Desert at Cabot's Pueblo Museum by:Mitchell Sussman

One the variety of attractions that are off the beaten path that can be found on

your next vacation to Palm Springs and the California desert cities is Cabot's Pueblo Museum.

Cabot's Pueblo Museum is a unique Hopi inspired pueblo that was built by Cabot Yerxa on property he homesteaded in 1913. He worked on the property until his death in 1965.

The expansive place is now a museum which recreates Cabot's life in the desert over 100 years.

ago. Cabot journeyed through the desert; gathering reclaimed materials from as far east as the Salton Sea, north to Morongo Valley, south to Palm Springs and west to White Water.

Located in Desert Hot Spring, just outside of Palm Springs.

Today Cabot's Pueblo Museum is a multi leveled building that includes 35 rooms, 150 windows, and 65 doors. All built by hand by one man, Cabot Yerxa. In addition to the building and the history of Cabot's journey's and adventures, there are also exhibits of Native American pottery, along with early 20th century photographs and artifacts from his Alaskan adventures.

There are guided tours of the grounds so that visitors journey through the life of Cabot Yerxa and his family including artifacts collected from their adventures dating back over 100 years. On the tour will his story from the Dakota Territory to Mexico, Cuba, Alaska, France, throughout California and the Southwest, including the founding of Desert Hot Springs, California.

The Cabot's Pueblo Museum grounds include a picnic area that is beautifully landscaped with native plants along with being home to many rustic period items such as early 1900's tools, machinery and house goods.

There are many opportunities for the kids to lose themselves in the activities at the museum and on the day that I want with my clan we packed a lunch and took in the day at the picnic area after spending some time with some of local artists that are on the grounds.

The museum is open year-round for single tours, and scheduled group tours and hosts special events.
