7 Tips To Write That Ideal Resume For An Offshore Drilling Rig Job

No matter which job you are applying for, writing the correct resume is of vital importance as this is your first introduction to your employer to be

. Remember, resumes can make or break careers, especially for newcomers to any profession. And offshore oil rigging is no exception. How then do you write that perfect resume for an offshore rig appointment?

*The golden rule of resume writing is to list your work experience in reverse chronological order that is start with your last job or the one that you are currently doing. Most people start with their first jobs and force the reader to go through it all before finding what he is looking for. This may irritate the reader and even force him to toss the CV aside.

*Make it a point to highlight your skills first in bullet form so that it tells the employer what you are actually capable of and whether you suit their requirements. Try and leave out job experience that is irrelevant to the job that has been advertised.

*Mention full details of all jobs previously held and not just the employer's name, your designation then and period of service. No boss is going to take the trouble of calling up your ex employers and ask them for details. As a roustabout in Alaska, if you have repaired damaged pipelines, mention it so that the reader understands what exactly you've been up to.

*When applying online or by email, avoid phrases like "I am job hunting" or Hello in the subject line of the mail as this may get treated as spam and hit the junk box. Rather, write something like CV for the post of electrician/mechanic/driller which makes more sense.

*Also make sure to mention the job codes and titles correctly as mentioned in the advertisement to avoid confusion. In case the job title or code has been incorrectly spelt, it is wise not to correct it as it is most likely to offend the advertiser.

*In spite of being qualified for two jobs mentioned in the same advertisement, it is always better to apply for one. Applying for both may overtax the advertiser and push him to reject your application.

*After drafting your cover letter and resume, run a thorough spellcheck on it to avoid spelling mistakes. This gives a very negative impression that you may be equally careless on the job and therefore, your resume isn't worth considering. Before sending off your application, also ensure that all your contact information is given clearly.

Last but not least, try and write a short paragraph citing reasons why the company should hire you.
