5 Food Storage Tips That Will Save You Money

Like millions of other people who feel their wallets squeezed and budgets pinched in this tight economy

, are you looking for ways to save money? Do you need to stretch your budget out just a little bit more to make ends meet? Do you feel like there's nothing you can cut that you haven't done already? If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, you may want to consider these five (5) food storage tips that will help you save money.

1. The refrigerator is your friend, so keep it cool. You will keep your food much longer in the refrigerator if you keep it at about 34 to 41F. Too often the refrigerator is set to a temperature that is either too cold -- which freezes your food -- or is not cold enough which makes your food go bad. Be sure to keep an eye on the expiration dates of the food in your refrigerator so you can use it before it spoils.

2. Keep your bread fresh. There are a couple of good ways to keep your bread fresh. The first way is to use a breadbox to store your bread and other foods like cookies, crackers, muffins etc. Storing your bread in the breadbox helps keep it fresher longer and prevents crumbs from getting all over the kitchen. Another way to keep your bread fresh is to put your bread in the refrigerator. As with any other food, the refrigerator helps keep the bread fresh for longer amounts of time.

3. Storing fruit. There are several ways you can store fresh fruit to last for several weeks. Perhaps the most obvious way is to put fruit in the refrigerator, and this is a good idea for fruit that is already ripened and ready to eat. Many fruits such as apples and errors strawberries and kiwi's can be stored in the refrigerator for several days if not weeks without turning bad. However don't put fruits such as bananas in the refrigerator because they turn black and get mushy.

4. Another fruit storage idea is to wrap the fruit in newspaper or paper towels and store them in a place that is cool, dark, well ventilated. Be sure to check the stored fruit on a regular basis and remove any fruit that is getting soft or otherwise not keeping very well.

5. The best way to keep fruit so it last for the longest possible amount of time is to put it in a bowl away from heat sources such as the oven, sunlight and lamps. Bananas should be stored in a different bowl as they can cause the other fruit to ripen too quickly.

In conclusion, we have looked at five different ways a person can save some money by storing food in a way that lengthens shelf life and reduces spoilage. Cutting costs a little here and a little there can add up to substantial savings in the long run. Saving on food costs is one of many steps you can take to stretch your budget and make your money go further.
