Author: Rich AlbertsonWe may need two fixes. One for the short term, an indispensable step, and the other for the long term, also indispensable but it might not look like it to many of us. First, the short term fix because, if we don't fix this part of climate change there's good reason to doubt we will be here long enough to need the long term fix. The extra CO2 we have sent up into the atmosphere will not be going elsewhere for thousands of...more
Author: Rich AlbertsonWhat follows probably shouldn't be called a “factoid.” Factual events are involved, but the analysis of their significance as a cause of climate change, that part is my opinion. That said, what events conspired to make climate change happen? Were we simply ignorant of the science involved? I'm afraid not, the greenhouse effect was well understood as far back as the 1890's and has been discussed frequently since. Here's a headline from an article in the May 15, 1932, edition of the NY Times, entitled “Next Great Deluge Forecast by Science – Melting Polar Caps to Raise the Seas and Flood the Continents.” Could that be made more clear? The article talks about CO2 and runs down the science pretty clearly. We knew, but it's also quite possible that the warnings were dismissed as whining by tree huggers or scare tactics by eco-terrorists.If not ignorance, what then. I think the central story starts in Berlin during the early 20th century. Einstein was teaching there and he was part of a small clique of brilliant scientists that included Fritz Haber, the discoverer of ammonia synthesis, which is the basis for modern chemical plant fertilizers. Oddly, Haber...more

Author: Rich AlbertsonIf it's coming, everyone wants to know when. “It” couldn't mean climate change itself, because that's been here and growing for nearly five decades now. I think “it” must mean some sort of plateau in the development of climate change where everything starts to go to “hell in a handbasket.” Whatever it means, no one...more
Author: Rj Levan Growing up in the country, my childhood house was built on 2-3 acres of land. There was plenty of room to move around (and way too much grass to mow!). The problem: the more space you have to utilize, the more junk you accumulate. Eventually, the storage spaces we had became full, and the two-car garage my father built was being used for everything but housing our cars. So of course, this meant parking our cars outside, creating the following problems: Snow and ice removal in the winter - Getting ready to leave in the winter months took 10-15 minutes longer than normal if there was a snowfall or sleet/freezing rain mix because the windows needed to be defrosted, and the elements swept from the vehicle. Tearing up the lawn - In the spring and summer, it was common to drive across the lawn to park close the house. If there was a rainstorm, there was sometimes damage done to the lawn in the form of tread marks and burnouts. Heat - Anytime my car sat out in the open during June and July, it sometimes took a while to cool it down without the shade of a garage. This may not sound like a huge deal, but wearing a shirt and tie isn't too fun when you are already pouring...more
