Why do Brits get called Poms? The answer to this is really straight forward but particularly interesting. Firstly, you have to understand that the question posed here isn't one out of surprise or astonishment - Australia immigration has long been something that many people have aspired to. Instead, the question is looking more at the fact of what makes some of Australia's primary cities be so good and liveable that they dominate The Economist's World's Most Liveable Cities index. Also, we're going to be looking at why the general public agree the four cities should be included, rather than the in-depth data that The Economist takes into consideration. If we take a look at the top ten section of the list as a whole, the positions are made up of cities from five different countries - aside from the four from Australia, there are three from Canada, one from Austria, one from Finland and one from New Zealand. Now if we group the cities together, there are three from Canada and the Americas, two from Europe and five from Oceania, which leads us into the first - and arguably most obvious - reason why there are four Australian cities in the top ten. In the UK, we generally have cold, wet winters, wet and breezy autumns and springs and mild summers, which together make up one of the least...more
Whether you've enjoying life in the UK at the minute or you're finding it a struggle, no one could argue that on the whole, things have generally been better. Take a question like this at face value and the answer will generally be yes, if comparing to the UK. Simply put, as Canada has a much lower population density than the UK (Canada is two hundred and twenty eighth in the world, whereas the UK is fifty first) and is a bigger country overall (Canada covers 3,855,100 square miles, whilst the UK only covers 128,066 square miles), there's likely to be more green grass. Get past this basic reply and depending on how you look at the country depends on how you determine whether Canada is a better place to live in than the UK. It must be noted, however, that whichever way you look at it, the prospect of living in Canada looks extremely appealing. Having already discussed the population density and amount of open land - which itself is a major coup for those applying for Canada immigration who are used to living in the UK, particularly in the major cities - one of the major positive points of the country is that it is essentially the United Kingdom with the bad points removed. For example, all Canadians have access to free public healthcare, just like the UK's NHS. Education is also completely free and compulsory up to the age of 16, although...more
