1. Get some bookmarks from known sites. Usually the first place people get links is from social bookmarking sites such as Digg, Redit, Propeller. These sites get lots of traffic and when you show up there, Google and other search engines will find you. They will add you to their list to index.
Getting indexed is important. If the search engines haven't found you and indexed your site then you will not be found.
2. Now that you are indexed it still doesn't mean that you will be found, but you do have a shot at it. Google is like life, the most popular people or businesses get asked out. Since you are now indexed, how popular are you? Do you only have the social bookmark links that we discussed? Not good enough, it puts you in the game but you aren't very popular yet. You need to write some articles for article directories, do press releases, search out blogs in your business area and make comments, join some forums and carefully post helpful information. Put your website in your signature but avoid sales talk. Follow this regimen and you will begin to gain popularity.
3. We haven't mentioned Keywords yet, keywords are actually the beginning of this process. Keywords should be at the core of your website. Keywords are the words that people type into Google when they want to find you. This is a different topic and one you must get right. We will have more on this point in a follow up article.
