Woman receives apology after jewellery was stolen
A woman who had an important piece of her jewellery stolen has received an apology from the culprit.
The 76-year-old, who did not wish to be identified, had her home broken into by a teenager, who took her engagement ring, the BBC reports.
She reported feeling violated as a result of the offence - which occurred not long after her husband lost a battle with cancer.
After being convicted of the crime, the 18-year-old thief - who also did not wish to be named - volunteered to meet the pensioner in order to make amends.
The pair convened at her home and she took the opportunity to explain how vulnerable the incident had left her feeling.
Property break-ins often cause emotional distress and this can be magnified if personal items such as diamond rings are taken.
As well as agreeing to speak to the victim, the criminal was ordered to pay compensation and carry out community service.
And, in good news for the elderly woman, police were successful in tracing the stolen jewellery and they managed to return it to her.
Commenting on his thoughts after committing the offence, the young man said: "I want to change and make the lady feel better. I just wanted to tell her I was sorry.
"Now that I've met her, I feel even worse - I feel bad for making an old lady cry after what I've done. I will keep in mind things she has told me and try to act on the advice she gave me about getting training."
Meanwhile, the woman noted that she feels the meeting made the teenager face up to his criminality.
She also noted that the ring was the only real jewellery she had ever owned and the loss of it intensified her grieving for her late spouse.
