They say that you must live and breath your business
, that you should be in love with it and that if you are not you will fail. Well, I see the logic but I have found that as in relationships, love truly can be blind.Very often an entrepreneur in their first business will fall so deeply for their idea that they will simply ignore, or at best avoid customer feedback - what if they don't like my idea? What if I was wrong to sweat over this for the last year?
I recently read a book by Duncan Banatyne who is a great inspiration. He explained how customer feedback was the backbone of his businesses, and that he would request feedback from anywhere he could and literally amend the business accoringly. Very often if you listen to customers you will find that your original idea will shift into something different, and of course that is ok, so long as it is what your customers are asking for!
My advice would be to start small and build into your business a strong customer feedback philosophy. From there you should grow your business by adhering to what you are told from your buyers. Don't love your business model ... love your business.
Joint Venturing is king
Another piece of advice is to do joint ventures with similar businesses to yours. Use other people's mailing lists and influence. www.wowjv.com for example is a great place to team up with other businesses online to help one another grow.
Find similar businesses and offer to do simple advertising for each other, or mention one another to your mailing list. This sounds simple but you can very quickly boost your mailing list and potential customer base by doing repeat JV's with multiple businesses!
