Why Most Businesses Fail

One of the reasons why most businesses fail is the fact that the most business owners are simply not willing to pay the price

. The pain of pursuit is often greater than the potential payoff. The daily grind chokes the life out of their business dreams.

Jim Rohn taught, "When the prize is clear, the price becomes easy."I love Jim. He had a such gift for saying so much with so few words.

In order to win the PRIZE, we must learn to pay the PRICE. Everyone wants to succeed in business and live the good life, but so few are truly willing to pay the price. Why? There's several reasons, but namely because the price of success is brutal, and most people are wimps and can't hack it, so they quit, or never start in the first place.

In the early days of my marketing business, there were many nights I cried myself to sleep. I can remember one night in particular whereI could feel streams of tears rolling across my temples and into my hair, as I laid in bed looking at the ceiling, feeling bewildered, wondering why God would "suffer" that I struggle so much, when I wanted it so bad.

Most "ordinary" people don't cry themselves to sleep hoping they can become successful, regardless of the venture. This is why they remain ordinary. And even a large percentage of extraordinary people who do cry themselves to sleep, either literally or figuratively, are not willing to do it night after night, month after month and year after year.until.

I think it's fair to say thatalmost everyone who starts a business, quits somewhere along the path. This is why so few people ever "make it." Most people reach a point in their struggle where they say, "This is not worth it." And they quit. When the pain of pursuit is greater than the potential payoff, it's over.

So how do make sure you don't become a casualty on your journey toward success in any endeavor? Your reasons for doing whatever you're doing, gotta be big. Really big. HUGE! If the "prize" is not significantly larger than the price you will have to pay, you aint gonna make it folks. Period. But on the flip side, if your reason/the prize is bigger than any potential obstacle, you have a real good shot.

I wanted to become successful so badly, I was willing to face any obstacle. And I had to face a bunch of them. And some of them were really, really difficult. I lost homes and cars and friends. I had to burry some of my friends and business partners. I ate garbage when I was lucky enough to eat. I lost a couple of six figure clients. I had to move 9 times in just a few years. I almost had to file bankruptcy but couldn't afford the attorney. I ruined my credit. My bank account was overdrawn for so long, the bank canceled my account and submitted a derogatory report about me to ChexSystems, which prevented me from getting a checking account for 7 years. And I could go on and on.

All through the struggle of business start up I would quote Og Mandino who said, "I will persist until I succeed!" And I would quote Jeff Olson who said, "Successful people do what unsuccessful people are not willing to do." And I would recall the story I read inThink And Grow Rich about the man who went to dig for gold, found some and started pulling a lot of it out of the mountain, when suddenly the vein dried up. Frustrated he sold his equipment for pennies on the dollar. Another man came to do some research and discovered one of the largest gold finds in American history3 feet from where his predesessor stopped digging. "I'm 3 feet from gold! I'm 3 feet from gold." I'd say it over and over and over. And no matter what I encountered, I kept going, because there was no price bigger than my prize. The prize was clear, and though I can't say the price was easy, I can say it was worth it.

So what do you want? Is it clear? Chrystal clear? Is what you want bigger than any obstacles you may encounter? If not, I suggest you take some time to look inside yourself and figure out why you're doing what you're doing. Dig deep. Ponder. This is one of the most critical steps you'll take in your journey towards success. Without getting real clear on the prize, the price will always remain on the distant horizon, close enough to see but just out of reach.
