Why Isn't How To Be A Parent Apparent?

A study published in the journal Pediatrics assures parents that having children vaccinated on schedule doesn't affect their mental skills later on

. Researchers examined data from more than 1,000 preteens who'd had psychological tests including IQ, memory, language and attention. The preteens were divided into 2 groups - those who had their vaccinations on schedule and those who had them late or only had some. The only difference in mental skills was that the on-schedule preteens did slightly better on some language tests. In spite of children being scheduled for vaccinations against 13 diseases before age 2, vaccination isn't spelled vac"sin"ation.

A blind study by Georgetown University Medical Center found that yogurt reduces childhood infections. The study consisted of more than 600 children, ages 3-6. Half the parents were given a drinkable, traditional yogurt to feed to their children regularly. The other half of the parents were given a drinkable, probiotic yogurt - yogurt containing beneficial bacteria. After 3 months the children fed the probiotic yogurt had experienced 18% fewer upper respiratory infections and 24% fewer gastrointestinal infections. Considering previous studies have shown the beneficial effect of probiotics on the immune system, parents shouldn't find this "hard to swallow".

A 2010 federally funded study tracked approximately 1,400 preteens starting in 1991 and found that low-quality childcare has lasting consequences. The study took into account the type and duration of childcare, family influence and assessments of the children's academic and cognitive skills. According to the findings, children receiving low-quality childcare through age 4 1/2 did worse in math, reading and other cognitive skills. They were also more likely to have behavior problems. The good news is the differences were small. The bad news is the differences continued through age 15 and had the potential of continuing through their lives. Obviously, more care is needed in choosing childcare.

Finally, a study presented at the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists found that overweight girls were 60% likelier than normal weight girls to have sex before age 13. Obese girls were 300% likelier. The study also showed that both overweight and obese girls were 30% likelier to have multiple sex partners as teens. Regarding birth control, both overweight and obese girls were 20% less likely to use condoms and 30% less likely to use other types of contraception. Explanations for the study's findings were early puberty and low self-esteem - both "weighty" issues.
