When Does A Baby Start Teething?
As a new parent, you may be wondering when you can expect your little one to start teething. The thought of teething may instantly bring to mind the thoughts of taking photos of a smiling baby with a single front tooth. Before you get to that point though, you must make it through the painful teething process, which can leave your baby cranky and crying many days.
Teething typically starts around when the baby is five months old, with most infants hitting the teething stage between four months old and seven months old. Of course, this does not mean that your baby won't start teething earlier or later. Some babies can start teething at around three months while others will wait it out and not being teething until 12 months or later. It can even be 18 months before you see that first little tooth.
One this is for sure though, when your baby starts teething, you will know it. Usually the first thing you start to notice is the increase in drool from the baby. If your kid turns into a little drool monster, it is time to start stocking up on teething toys. Babies also start to chew on everything once they begin teething. This is due to the fact that chewing on things relieves some of the pain in the sore gums caused by teething.
If you see these signs but you still are not sure if your child is teething, there is another thing you can do to find out. This works especially well if you have a baby that is cranky already. Just put your index finger in the baby's mouth and rub his little gums. Teething typically starts with the bottom teeth, so rub your finger back and forth along the bottom gum. You are not feeling for little teeth. Instead, you are seeing if this seems to soothe the baby. If so, the child is definitely teething.
When you notice that the child does, in fact, seem to be teething, you need to get some teething toys. These are great for helping the baby through the teething process. You can check out the top teething toys for 2011 or read reviews on teethers on the Best Teether website.
