What small business owners should know about on page SEO before you build your web site

Small businessmen who are considering having a web site made have to decide if they

want to try and build the site themselves, or have it built by someone else. It is my firm belief that you should stick to your business and have your site built by someone who knows what they are doing.

However, I know that not everyone can afford it and many people just want to learn how to do it themselves. I will skip the "You know about as much about building and marketing web sites as a webmaster knows about running your business" speech, and get down to the details. Please understand also, this article is just an explanation of "On Page" SEO, not a definitive guide to all aspects of SEO.

Simply put. "on page" SEO is making sure that your web page is built in such a manner that search engines can tell exactly what it is about.

The single most important thing you need to do before you build your web site is Keyword Research. You must know what people type into the search box when they are looking for a service or product like yours. Keyword Research is so important that it deserves much more attention than I can give for this article. In fact, if you have not done the keyword research, it will be wasting your money to build a web site.

For our purposes we will assume that you know which keywords you wish to target for your website and you are ready to build it.

On page SEO factors include the so-called "Meta" information in the header for the web page. These include "tags" such as "title", "keywords" "description" and so on. Search engines add the Meta information into their calculations to determine what the site is about. The name of the web page is especially important in these considerations. The main body content, the names of the images and other components are also important.

Keep these things in mind as you go about planning your site:

The URL of the page will be much more effective if the keywords you are targeting are contained in the page name. Example: http://airconditioningfilters.com is better than http://bills-ac-supply.com. If you are stuck with a non keyword company name, your air conditioning filter page should use a page name like "www.bills-ac-supply.com/air-conditioning-filters.html".

The title of the page is the next most important thing you must get right. Your title needs to be as few words as possible that describe what the page is about. The words at the start of the title will carry more weight, so you want your keywords as close to the start of the title. Keep it short! "Air conditioning filters for all major brands" is better than "Johnson supply carries all brands and sizes of air conditioning filters"

Next is the description. This is valuable to your web page, but not entirely because of it's SEO value, which is huge. The description is also usually displayed by the search engines in the search results, as a synopsis of what your site is about. Your description needs be a couple of sentences about the web page, written as if a human is going to read them, but still including your keywords. "Air conditioning filters by Johnson SupplyJohnson supply carries all major brands and sizes of air conditioning filters, Continently located in the Kroger shopping canter on Barksdale, we deliver within 50 miles". This description is easy to read and makes sense for a human who is reading it. There is enough information to help the searcher decide if this is the best choice for them, and it still has keywords near the beginning of the description to help with SEO.

The main body content should mention your keyword phrase in exact order a couple of times. You should try to have at least 250 words on each page, generally no more than 1000. If you have 1000 words, you can mention your keywords 3 or 4 times.

Within the main body content you have "header" tags. These header tags are like page sub headings, and using keywords or synonyms of keywords in the H1 and H2 tags will help with SEO

Images and Video-these are generally not visible to search engines, and you must assign an ALT tag description to each of these. Use your keywords for these items, but do not duplicate a name on the same page. If you have photo of a carrier air conditioner on your home page, labeling it as "air conditioner filters logo" is better that "carrier ac picture". If the ALT attributes on images and video are carefully done, it will help with SEO quite a bit.

Make sure there are no errors. Misspellings and alignment display problems will make your web site look amateurish. Even worse, code validation errors in the HTML or CSS code will count against you.

Link your pages together. Use navigation links from the home page to every page in your site that you want to have indexed by the search engines. They will follow the links and find all of your pages. The more pages you have the better search engines like you!! Broken links that point nowhere will count against you.

There are a lot of other nuances of SEO, but these factors are the major payers in on page optimization of a web page.

After your web site goes live, you will have to start off page optimization from then on, in order for your web site to rank well in the search engine results pages.

What this means to the owner of a website is that the website must be built with the correct structure, adhere to professional standards, have validated code, with the right mix of keywords, and the right Meta information so that the site isoptimized for the keywords that your potential customer is actually searching with.

It also means that someone has to pay attention to the SEO of your website for as long as you own it. If you do not do this maintenance you will have to have someone else do it. At first, you want your site to move up the rankings until it is on the front page, then into the top few results. Even after you attain this ranking in the search results, every competitor you have will be working diligently to unseat you and take your place. You must constantly improve your SEO to raise your ranking and keep it as high as possible.
