What Should Parents Know About Parenting?

Fathers want respect. That was the finding of a 2012 survey of 1,500 dads and 2,700 moms by the website Parenting. Fifty percent of dads thought they split childcare evenly with their partners, but 75% of moms said they did most of the childcare. Ninety-five percent of moms said they were the "go-to" parent, but 33% of dads disagreed. Finally, 66% of dads wanted verbal acknowledgment of their sharing childcare; and 60% of moms wanted something special done for them or time off from the children. It seems parents should get on the same page - way before reading Mother Goose.

Mothers may want to rethink breastfeeding. Not only is it better for babies, but breastfeeding also burns up 500 calories daily, regulates hormones and reduces risk of breast and ovarian cancers. A study published in the International Journal of Obesity found every 6 months of breastfeeding was associated with a 1% drop in body mass index among women in their 50's and early 60's. Prospective studies have shown a BMI increase of 1% is equal to a 1% increase in the risk of dying from any cause. Thus a 1% decrease may be due to the "milk of human kindness".

Magnets in toys have become even more dangerous to children. "Rare earth" or "neodynium" magnets are much more powerful and are much more likely to clump together inside the body. They can cause twisted or perforated intestines, as well as other major problems in children's digestive systems. Between 2008 and 2012 the Consumer Products Safety Commission was notified about 200 cases of children swallowing high-powered magnets. Magnets in adult desktop toys - such as Buckyballs and NeoCubes - come with safety instructions, but should toys need safety instructions? All toys with magnets can "play havoc" with children's lives.

For older children driving remains a danger. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported drivers ages 15 to 24 accounted for 22% of the 34,485 U.S. motor deaths in 2009. This high rate was attributed to the inexperience of young adults and to the likelihood of their engaging in higher-risk driving - like driving at night and driving with multiple people in the car. Graduated licensing policies from permit to restricted license to full license have been effective in reducing driving deaths, as have driving agreements between children and their parents. Unfortunately, this isn't the only age at which children "drive their parents crazy".
