And it is during times of crisis that true leaders emerge. It can be said that this is not taught or learned but rather inbred in the spirit of the leader. It is when we face a challenge we find a valid test of our leadership abilities.
A leader's job can be boiled down to one thing : problem solver. The greater level of responsibility, the more problems and crisis there are to overcome. The only thing that a leader can control when these inevitable crises occur is how to respond. It is has to be dealt with, so remember-the key to the leader's ability to control any situation is attitude.The following are characteristics a leader must demonstrate in order to be effective and respected.
A leader possesses both an innate determination in themself to find solutions and projects confidence believing no obstacle to be too big or challenging. What follows are a few extra tips on how a leader shouldact when faced with the crises that find them and their team .
-Remain calm. Take a deep breath. Demonstrating this lets your team know you are equipped for whatever, and that you are in command of every situation. This is the sort of person they would like to follow.
- Get the facts. Not the assumed or apparent facts get the real facts. Often times when something goes wrong we don't have the full story. The natural tendency of weak people is to jump to conclusions and run around in circles. The way to stay calm and to get the facts is to ask questions. Leaders are listeners ! Sounds almost oxymoronic, but when I was running a business I encountered numerous occasions where finding out the facts first saved me a lot more trouble-and from looking stupid. Leaders ask a lot of questions. They withhold judgment until they have all the information and then make a decision.
- Accept responsibility. Even if itis not your fault, people want to look to someone for answers when things go improperly. If there was a partyou could have enhanced, admit it. People respect someone that doesn't evade responsibility.
- Stay confident. People are looking to you and will follow your example so you MUST hold inside whatever you may be sincerely be feeling for the sake of others around you. Losing one's head in a disaster, flipping out, or blaming others does not make one the kind of person people want to be around or follow.
- Unleash Creativity. Ask the question, "How?" "How can we solve this problem?" "How can we overcome?" The mind only answers questions that we ask. Use this technique: Take a piece of paper and with your team ask the question, "How can we solve this problem?" Get people involved in the solution. "We can do more of this or we can do less of that" Be solution oriented at all times. Weak people = blame oriented. They go on a witch hunt or thrrow a pity party. Don't focus on what can't be changed, only on what can be changed.
- Focus on priorities. Elect what needs to be completed first . Then take charge. Standing around is no improvement at all.
- Counter . Go on the offensive. Stop. Think. Get the facts and get to work. See the key people. Talk to the players that need to be talked to. Make the phone calls. Attend the meetings. Stay action oriented. There is nothing like action to give us a sense of control and personal power. As we take action then we get feedback to self-correct and take more action. The more active we are the more ideas we get and more action can be taken.
Crunch time is inevitable. Throughout life there will be unexpected challenges, problems and crises. The only question is how well we perform under those circumstances. If we perform well in crunch time then we will be true leaders and lead an inspired life.
