The time has come to face reality. If we want money in our pockets, somebody has to put it there. Selling is one of the keys to doing just that.

Every time I investigate one of these exciting once in a life time get rich quick schemes, I end up disappointed, discouraged, and financially closer to being destitute. Have you seen how many business opportunities offer a no selling, no investment, no endless hours of stress, no work?

Real businesses succeed or fail by doing or not doing four key things: having specialize knowledge or skill; meet customer needs; attract new customers; hold on to customers happy.

How can you find new customers? Remember, you have no choice. To have a business you must find customers.

Any time someone tells you that you can make loads of money without selling, finding customers, or making sales; just recognize it as a lie. Failure to get customers means there really is no business. One essential for every business is gaining customers and making sales. In real business, you must continually get customers.

Advertise or have others advertise for you. These are your options. If you intend to get new customers, you must advertise. Initially, think about what advertising you can do.

You can market your business in many of different ways. You can rent billboards. You can send mail directly to thousands of sewing machine owners as postcards or letters. You can distribute fliers and posters. You can place space ads or classified ads in your local newspaper. You can market in magazines and bulk advertising programs like Val Pak. You can market through telemarketing, radio, TV, internet, and similar media.

Advertising is the fastest and easiest way to get prospects and make them customers. In just a few days, you can have real customers and be making real dollars. Why promote your business? Of course, to get new customers and get paid.

How much money can you afford to waste ? Ouch, sounds gross. Unfortunately, most advertising does exactly that. It is not only very expensive. It often does not work. If you are just starting your business, you need to understand that any money you spend on advertising may be like wasting it ? For that reason, you need to be careful. You goal is to make ten times in sales whatever you invest in advertising. Your bottom line must be finding buying customers.

What advertising will work for you? You have to decide. Weigh the effectiveness, cost, and potential of each medium. Just because a type of marketing works for someone else's business is no reason to think it will automatically work for yours. You need to understand your customers and how they are most likely to find you.

If your business is going to operate out of your home or garage, what advertising do you think will best reach your prospects? If you have a store front, how does this change the dynamics? Think about your business.

The typical advertising approaches small business owners consider include space ads in the newspaper, classified ads in the newspaper, bulk advertising programs, and direct mail. But for this discussion, let's assume our business is operated out of our residential workshop . That means we need customers to come to our home. We need customers to trust us as a neighbor. With this in mind, what advertising vehicles might be most effective for us?

If you have loads of money, or some specialty situation, a space ad in the newspaper can be productive. Are space ads in the newspaper a good choice? Examine the cost, size of the ad, number of competing ads, size of the paper, distribution, and expected exposure of people to your ad. How many people will actually notice your ad? How many customers will your ad produce? What is your return on investment or sales per ad dollar?

Considering your home based business, classified ads are often even more attractive as an advertising medium. Still, apply the same advertising tracking and cost evaluation to make sure you are effectively reaching your target prospects. The cost of classified ads is much less than space ads. Yet, the reach of classified ads is often far more effective than display ads. Classified ads are placed in specific categories to make it easy for prospects to find your service. Therefore, placing a small classified ad in the newspaper will not only reach prospects who are interested in your service, it does so at a very minimal cost.

Think about going directly to the people. You can do this with direct mail, direct distribution, and distribution of batched advertising. Always evaluate the associated costs, but in many ways putting your information in the hands of prospects is the whole idea.

The cost of TV and radio make these less attractive. Remember your goal is to Find new customers as fast as possible and at the least possible cost.

Attract new customers by strategically advertising. Be ready to spend a little to make a little. Just make sure every promotion dollar produces real results: new customers, sales, and profit.
