Running your home marketing business comes with enough distractions. Between telemarketers calling all day, emails, product development, marketing, and advertising getting through the day can be challenging. Then throw in your children...who may be poking your side right now wanting to play! Go play, I'll be right here when you're done...
Okay, now that we're all happy let's get on with our lesson today. Flexibility is going to be the main theme. I think that flexibility will be the 'golden ticket' to balancing your home marketing business and family needs.
Teens and older children are typically old enough to understand that just like they have responsibilities, so do you. Usually a quick and simple explanation of your schedule and the fact that your work is what brings in money is enough. If they seem interested in what you do, 'hire' them to help you accomplish some tasks...tax laws will allow you to hire your children and write off their salary, which could be future college money! Of course, you will want to consult your tax advisor for the best advice. But bringing your teen in to help with administrative stuff teaches them responsibility and good work ethic and also enables you to bond and share with them what you actually do.
Infants on the other hand have no idea, nor do they care what your schedule is. This is where flexibility comes in and you'll want to schedule business around the needs of the baby. Nap time is the prime time to get stuff done...unless, of course, you need to take a nap too!
Toddlers...ahhh the "terrible two's". You will need to be both flexible and rigid during this time. You will want to develop a set routine everyday; meal times, nap times, and play times. Being strict about your time with them and your business will help them learn to respect for your 'rules' and will minimize disruptions.
However...allow them to sit in your lap when you can, such as while you're browsing a website or reading something. Let them keep toys in your home office and when you need them to get down, simply tell them to and they will most likely sit contently and play on their own. They will be happy that you're near by and there if they need you. Take a break every hour and spend ten minutes just with them, hugging, kissing, talking, eating, playing...etc.
