What a fantastic idea - to start your own Home Business
. Not to have to commute. At least not too far, or too often. To be your own boss. To work when you want to. And to make decent money into the bargain. What could be better?These benefits are all possible working from home. But a home business is by definition, a business. As such, it should be approached in the same way as you would any kind of business that you are setting up yourself. The same rules apply. The same anxieties prevail. And of course, the same rewards ensue.
People think that running a business from their home is much simpler than "going to work" somewhere else. Obviously, in some ways it is. But it brings with it many sometimes unsuspected problems not encountered with work you "go out to" each day. For that reason you need to be very firm and organised.
The common bad habits of running any business from where you live, is that you may be sloppy about time. Breakfast may drag on till nine thirty, since there's no boss and, well, are you not really at work anyhow, "what's the rush"? So the first thing is; give yourself strict written rules. And follow them rigidly. And make sure any other family members are completely clear about the rules too and never interfere with you when you're "at work".
Just like any "normal" business, set times for when you start work. Set times for when you take a break. And set times for when you finish. Whatever kind of work you will be doing, make sure your workplace is exclusively yours. Unless, of course, your home business involves having others working with you too. During time scheduled as "work time", don't be tempted to vacuum the house, or put clothes in the washer or do other domestic work just because you're at home. Your home may sparkle, but your business will suffer.
You must be very strict too about friends calling over. It will take them a while not to regard you as being at home and not really at work. If they want to meet you, tell them you'll meet them for lunch or preferably after work, (whatever time your strict schedule says that should be).
Probably the greatest mistake that most people make when they set up any Home Business is that they slowly allow some less than professional bad habits to creep in. In other words, they begin to bend the first and most important rule.
It's a Home Business. But it's a business, plain and simple. It operates like any successful business. Rules, procedures, schedule, deadlines. Otherwise it will not be a successful business. In short, it will be a failed business.
