. Sounds simple but everyone thinks they know all about advertising because we are all hit with it square between the eyes umpteen dozen times a day. Just because you are familiar with it doesn't mean that we all understand it.

If that sounds like double-Dutch, when you think about what advertising really is, then you start to look behind the glamour (such as it is) and start to look at the mechanism of what advertising really is, why it is done, how it can be done, what do people hope to achieve by doing it, when it needs to be done and who does it.

This is the basic foundation for advertising that applies from a small business to the biggest multinational companies around the world. The real difference between a small business and a multinational company advertising agenda is the money available for bad advertising campaigns is considerably larger for multinational companies than it is for a small business.

If a small business gets it wrong, their losses will hurt a lot more than it will hurt the shareholders of a multinational company. A small business owner needs to be a very competent person with a wide range of general knowledge. This broad understanding of so many aspects to running a business is something that is not required, and is rarely found, in the average employee.

The small business owner not only needs to garner advertising skills, they must also have a broad range of business knowledge. Then they must also have a broad range of skills to use to put this knowledge into action and how to maximise the use of this knowledge.

Once a prospective business person understands the range of knowledge and skills required to run a business, then the next thing they need to do is to start talking about their proposed new business to family and friends. Why?

Advertising is all about telling people what you have, where you are, what you have that is different or can do for them, where you are located and why they should buy from you or use your services over someone else's. One of the biggest things some people overlook is telling people how they can be found. If you don't tell people how to find you, then they are unlikely to be able to become a customer.

Next, be sure to always take the time to check and double check all text, phone numbers, spelling, grammar, website address (if you have one) and lastly, check your phone number again.

Advertising in its simplest form, is simply telling people about your business. It doesn't matter what type of business it is that you are running; whether it is a service based business or a retail business, if you don't let people know where you are and what you do, you won't be doing whatever you are trying to do for very long.
