In general, in order for the courts to qualify you as an expert in a particular field you normally need several years (5 years, 10 year or more) of work experience in addition to your academic training. Having earned an AA, BS or MS degree in a related field certainly is beneficial for an expert witness, directly relevant work experience can be used in certain situations in lieu of formal academic study. Experts who lack a lot of formal college or university coursework or degrees can attend continuing education classes, workshops or professional conferences to make up for the lack of formal education if they have a solid amount of work experience or "training on the job."
