Through its portrayal in such shows as Frasier and Sex and the City some may have made the assumption that those of higher class prefer this method of meeting people for romantic interests over other methods, and this is possible one of the things that helped lead to the overwhelming popularity of the events.

The basic idea behind speed dating is to meet as many people as possible in a rather short amount of time. This is done by having those who attend each spend just a few minutes of the event with each member of the opposite sex that shows up. What this is intended to do is let people decide off of nothing more than just a first impression whether or not the other person might be someone that they could be romantically involved with or not. This seems to work really well due to the fact that human nature is to judge others off of the first impression that we get of them. If the impression is bad, then we are not at all likely to be attracted to them in a romantic way, but if it is good, then there is a chance that it could lead to romance. This also relies on what is commonly referred to as "chemistry" between two people. There are many times that you meet someone and just know that there is an interest there immediately. The combination of the first impression and instincts of attraction make this a really easy way to find a date.

From there it became a very popular event all over, only aided in popularity by movies and television shows.
