Family lawyer needs to specialize in the family law in order to handle the domestic and family matters properly. For instance, he represents his clients in the court to resolve the child custody cases or adoption etc

1.Being a family lawyer, you have to be a good negotiator and communicator. Besides these, you have to develop some other skills like reading, writing and reasoning skills. For this, you have to start working while still in your high school or college or university. Participate in schools debate programs, contribute in schools paper or take part in public speaking events right from your high school.

2.The next step is to get your four years college or university degree. It is a prerequisite for the admission in a law school to have a Bachelors degree. You can take your degree with any of the courses you like, but have to make sure that your GPA at the end remains above average.

3.After getting a degree, you need to pass the LSAT test with high scores. It is another essential condition for admission in a law school. As competition for getting admission in a law school is high, your LSAT score determines the possibility of your admission in a law school.

4.Make a list of the law schools and shortlist few where you want to try your luck. Prepare all your documents well before the deadlines. You may need all the school records, LSAT scores, letter of recommendation, admission essays, statements of motivation and a detailed resume to entertain your application file. Make sure that you send the application file to law school or schools quite in time before the deadline.

5.Depending on the program you choose to take in the law school, i.e. full time or part-time program, it will take three to five years to graduate from the law school.

6.The first year is normally devoted to the basics of legal system. However, in second and third year, you will get a chance to choose the courses that best relate to your area of specialization. Here, you have to go for family law as your major in the law school.

7.Find an internship with a licensed family lawyer, so that you can gain some hands-on experience in the working environment.

8.Earn you JD degree, and start preparing for the bar exam in your state. You have to pass this exam in order to obtain your license. Getting a license means you can start practicing law as a family lawyer.

9.Advertise yourself on internet with popular lawyer directories and also ask American Bar Association to add your name in its online database as a family lawyer.
