So what makes camera-based systems special? For over thirty years, lasers have been used to scan packages, but read rates are the key to high-speed parcel sortation and camera technology allows users to achieve previously impossible levels of efficiency.
Lasers rely on barcodes, a series of lines or dots printed alongside the human readable information. However, lasers have trouble reading dirty, damaged, marked or poor quality codes. This results in misreads, which cost time and money to process manually.
Camera systems read barcodes, 2D codes, badly damaged or marked codes, and codes behind reflective packaging. They also use optical character recognition (OCR) techniques to identify text, and human written address information. Camera systems operate very quickly (up to twenty times faster than laser scanners) and read nearly 100% of labels correctly.
Videocoding for 100% efficiency
In the unlikely event of an unreadable label, videocoding terminals allow operators to swiftly input parcel details manually. Camera systems support two types of videocoding: Online, where operators input the missing details while the parcel continues through the sorting system, and offline, which stores the images for later processing. Either system enables users to achieve a 100% read rate.
Multi-sided label reading
Systems with multiple cameras read labels on up to six sides of a parcel. This means a label can be anywhere on the front, back, top, bottom or sides of a parcel and in any orientation on these faces. Camera systems contain no moving parts and require little maintenance, therefore guaranteeing a high level of availability and reliability.
Measure parcel volume and weight automatically
Most camera systems are modular. Integrated volume-measuring units and in-motion scales are available, which allow companies to optimise valuable transit space in delivery vehicles, verify data provided by customers, and automate invoicing. This leads to significant cost savings.

Camera systems process thousands of parcels an hour automatically, allowing warehouses and distribution centres to achieve high throughputs. They are a quicker more efficient alternative to laser scanners.
