Solid Modeling Vs Surface Modeling

The area of surface and solid modeling deals with shape

, design and representation of physical objects. A thorough knowledge of different aspects of modeling is essential for anyone in the CAD field.

Since the late 1980s, software developers began applying higher levels of abstraction to their solid modeling construction techniques. Solid modeling is a technique for representing solid objects suitable for computer processing. It is primarily used for CAD, engineering analysis, computer graphics and animation, rapid prototyping, medical testing, product visualization and visualization of scientific research. Surface modeling, on the other hand, involves describing the 3-dimensional image.

But, both have their own significance as far as CAD firms are concerned. While surface modeling develops shapes by stretching a "surface" between 3D curves that you individually create, solid modeling involves representing an object unambiguously by describing its surface boundary and by topologically orienting it, so that we can tell, at each surface point, on which side the solid interior lies.

So, you need to strike a balance between both the techniques by integrating the two. Solid modeling has an edge over surface modeling as the former gives only a geometrical description of the object boundary without any topological information and is not parametric in nature. Definitely, when you see the structural form of your design rather than a 3D representation, you can have a better picture of how your design will take shape at the end.

With solid modeling techniques in hand, modelers are typically built with more robust engineering tools. The real power of a solid modeling application is how it can take the solid objects and combine them together by intersecting, joining, or subtracting the objects from one another to create the desired resulting shapes. Because everything in a solid model design is a 'watertight' model of the part, the solid modeler is able to know the topology of the entire model. Surface modelers on the other hand are built with more of an emphasis on creating aesthetic external surfaces typically for automobiles, then trickling to mainstream products.

You need to analyze the pros and cons of both these modeling techniques, so that you can make the best use of their benefits. First and foremost, you must understand that, solid modeling and surface modeling are offshoots of the same nurbs technology. Solid modeling will serve its purpose in engineering whereas surface modeling is set to create intricate surfaces.

Even more will come your way when you make a systematic integration of both these techniques. Solid modelers are able to support solids composed of polyhedral models and quadric surfaces (such as spheres, cylinders etc.) and their Boolean combinations. At the same time, the field of surface modeling has been developed to model the classes of piecewise surfaces based on particular conditions of shape and smoothness.

Thus, both these modeling techniques: surface and solid, are industry as well as design specific. Since CAD work involves designing automobiles, bridges, apartments, malls and other forms of construction, both solid and surface modeling techniques need to be wisely used as per the requirements of that particular product.
