Single Parenting Effects

Single parenting is not an easy situation

Single parenting is not an easy situation. Many times people are put down for being a single parent. Many times people stereotype single parents and they assume that their children will not be as well off as children in a two parent home. This has been proven to be untrue. Additionally, there are many reasons why someone may end up as a single parent. Before assuming anything, you should look into the reasons why a person may be a single parent and the challenges they face that a two parent situation may not.

Many times, people assume, scrutinize, misjudge and look down on single parents because they believe they are single as a result of having children out of wedlock. They assume that single parents are in that position because of promiscuity, lack of self esteem, and selfishness, to name a few. However, that is not always the case. Today, the leading number of single parent homes are as a result of divorce, death and abandonment.

The negative effects of single parents on the children involved have been known for years and are very predictable. Here, we examine the not-so-predictable positive effects that single moms and dads can have on kids. Kids raised in a one parent household develop stronger bonds with their parent than kids raised by both parents. They also develop a stronger sense of community due to the extra support system required by a single parent.

The strengths of single-parents are often shadowed by myths and negative assumptions. An investigation of social work students' perception of single- parent families revealed that while the students perceived women and people of color as oppressed, they did not have the same opinion of single-parents. Instead, they viewed the single-parent status to be the result of individual choice that results in self-imposed hardships.

It's often said by mothers that the husband is like another child in the house, in fact my husband jokes about it! Of course some husbands are more helpful and considerate around the house than others. But all husbands make basic demands on their wives' time and energy. For the single mother they need only worry about themselves and the kids.

Another of the cons of single parenting is financial pressure. In the modern world and the expectations that most of us (at least in the Western world) have about our lifestyle, it is imperative to have two incomes coming into the household. Everything costs so much and the kids have high expectations; wanting this toy and that computer game. This can put incredible pressures on single parents who tend to have severely constrained finances.

One of the most noticeable effects of single parenting is that children do not get as much of an opportunity to build healthy emotional bonds with a person whom they trust, simply because there is one less person around with whom they can bond. Children need to be able to share their daily struggles and triumphs in a nonjudgmental environment and be reassured that they are unconditionally loved no matter how often they feel like they have failed.
