Parents, Watch Out for Window Blinds
Recent news tells us that the life one child is wasted in a month just because of blinds or shade cord strangulation.
"Health and Safety" - this is a catch phrase which leaves a bland after-taste nowadays because of extreme overuse. But heeding to "health and safety" measures may end up saving a life in the end.
According to statistics, from the year 1990, about 200 infants and young kids lost their lives because of window cord strangling accidents. The statistics spell a grim outlook, and the loss of children lives is tragical and unfortunate, but one could have avoided these accidents through careful planning.
To avoid losing more lives, the Window Covering Safety Council is now working hand in hand with the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission to disseminate information awareness and to tell everyone that the National Window Covering Month is celebrated this October.
This is will be true to people in United States, but it does not mean that people from the United Kingdom must turn a deaf ear and blind eye on this. The same kind of unfortunate incidents happen in UK too. Deaths caused by window blinds are not isolated cases. If one would find out how many homes in some countries use window blinds in their home, you will realize that every single one of those homes have a susceptibility to this accident.
It is the toddlers that suffer the most. Sure, a little bruise and scratch is okay for a growing child, but getting strangled in window blind cords is way too different from just having a knee graze.
Parents should be responsible enough to provide security for the children. The list of health and safety measures to protect the young ones just go on from use of safety plugs to avoid electrocution to putting poisonous chemicals out of reach.
The job of watching kids get even more challenging if the children are bouncing balls of energy. These types are more vulnerable to cord strangling. A precaution you could take is removing that window blind and setting up temporary blinds instead. Temporary blinds practically do not have any cords that can kill your kids by accident.
Venetian blinds are another type of window blinds that do not use cords, but these types costs more. The decision to make the house "strangle-proof" still depends on the parents who have the capacity to plan and point out risky spots or furniture inside the house. Parents must make sure that cleaning materials and medicines are appropriately stored and damaged furniture is repaired.
This is a task that must be shouldered or at least be taken into consideration by the parents and manufacturer. The makers of these products must also ensure that every merchandise that comes out of their company has complied with the proper health and safety guidelines. That being said, an accident is still an accident, and reprimanding the parents for the loss of their children will only worsen the case.
Losing a child because of a simple window blind cord is very devastating. You need to secure everything on your home and really make an effort that indeed, your child is safer in your hands and in your home.
