Learning The Basics
The arrival of a newborn baby is very exciting, but there will be times when you may feel over- whelmed. This is perfectly normal, and all part of adjusting to your new addition to the family, and also a new sense of responsibility which you have, for another little person. Not many people talk about the baby-blues, which generally occurs a few days after you give birth.
As your hormones begin to change, you will most likely feel tearful, and for no particular reason, but this really is perfectly normal, so please don't worry when it happens. I found the best way to deal with it was to laugh about it, and I also encouraged my other family members to tease me about it. It will soon pass.
There are just three things which might be considered very important for you to remember in the beginning, and these are:
You, are everything your baby needs, so relax, and sleep when your little one sleeps and enjoy being a mother. Forget about housework, hopefully you will have either your husband/partner or another family member to support you for the first couple of weeks.
Whether you elect to Breast feed or not, it is your personal choice, and which ever you do choose will be right for your baby. You may notice that I encourage Breast feeding, but just call me plain lazy, I chose to Breast feed for two reasons, (a) Quick and easy to prepare, just put baby to your breast, and (b)No bottles to sterilize.
Thirdly, when your baby cries, don't worry, it is usually because it is nearly feed time, or nappy needs changing, or maybe wind, so just run through the check list. Naturally if it is daytime, you may like to take the opportunity to talk to your little one, even tell them about other family members, babies love to be talked to. Your tone of voice and rhythm of speaking will entrance baby.
Always check the nappy, if your little one is restless, pay particular attention to swiftly changing the nappy, if baby has also opened their bowels, because when urine comes into contact with faeces a chemical reaction takes place, and it will quickly irritate their sensitive baby skin, and can actually burn. Best to avoid that happening.
Establishing Routines.
As much as you want to hold your baby all the time, you simply can't-and shouldn't. Remember that you also need to take care of yourself, so once you have fed changed winded cuddled talked and popped baby back down in their crib for a sleep, you should take a relaxing bath, and pamper yourself.
You really do deserve it. Then have a lie down, and if possible a sleep, remember you need to restore your own energy levels, because child birth is very strenuous, thus requiring time for your body to recover.
It is also important to drink plenty of fluids and eat a balanced diet, and If you have elected to breast feed, do remember to drink at least one large glass of water after every feed. This helps with your milk production. Do keep alcohol consumption to a minimum. You will also notice that certain foods have a noticeable effect on your baby's bowel motion, if you are breast feeding. Spicy foods should be avoided.
Once you have established a basic routine for you and baby, do try to make time for your husband/partner . It will be a big adjustment for them too.
They may feel a little bit neglected, when the demands of the baby take precedence over everything, a fact they may strenuously deny, but yet again, this is a feeling which is perfectly normal. So do try to have a couple of hours of alone time with the man in your life, whilst your little one is asleep, and just enjoy being together. Once you have all settled into a workable routine, ask a family member to baby-sit once a week, and use that time to go out with your partner for some quality time together, you both deserve to indulge yourselves a little, and this will be very good for baby too helping them to adjust to separating from you from time to time.
To recap,; Relax, plenty of rest/sleep, balanced diet, plenty of non alcoholic fluids, accept help from family members, establish a routine, and remember your baby will either be ready for a feed, need nappy change or have wind, if they are crying and will not settle.Nothing you cannot handle! Enjoy the delights of parenthood, and congratulations!
