Monopoly Revolution - A Modern Twist on an Old Family Favourite
Monopoly Revolution - A Modern Twist on an Old Family Favourite
Growing up, Monopoly was a tradition in my house. When we had friends over, out would come the Monopoly board, and hours would vanish as we were all engrossed in trying to become property tycoons. There is a new, modern version of Monopoly, here is my review.
Will Monopoly Revolution create a whole new generation of Monopoly players? It certainly seems that it will. One of the common complaints about the old format of the game was that one game could last forever. This isn't the case with the new game. Slight changes have been introduced which will speed up play.
So how does Monopoly Revolution differ from the old game? It was released to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the game so you can expect some changes. The board has been revolutionized and is now round in shape as opposed to square. Most people found it was nicer this way and much better for people sitting around a table. I must say, for us seasoned players, it does take a little bit of getting used to, but it is quite pleasing to the eye.
It is divided into four zones. The Chance and Community Chest cards have been combined and a new twist added which adds an extra dimension to the game. When you land on a zone space, you can either give everyone else in that Zone a Chance or you can put a property up for auction by moving to the next unoccupied property. If all the properties have already been bought you can force a deal i.e. you may swap a property. This is a fresh idea that keeps the game exciting.
The prices of various properties have been increased to reflect current values and now when you land on a property you have the option to buy it or auction it. This is good, as the prices were so out of date, the new values add a bit of reality to the game. You can also swap properties. These combined changes are a huge time saver. The familiar silver pieces like the top hat and car have been replaced by plastic movers and are now in the shape of a hat, shoe, dog, car, iron and ship. I kind of liked the silver pieces, but hey we live in a plastic world now. The Chance and Community Chest cards have been combined and a new twist added which adds an extra dimension to the game.
The biggest change is probably the fact that the cash has disappeared. Monopoly money is no more. Now you have a debit card but you still need to keep track of your finances or you could find yourself bankrupt. The change from cash to card has to be the least favorite of the changes made in this new game. Everyone likes to have cash in their hands, even if it is only Monopoly money. Most reviewers commented on the fact that the old Monopoly money had an educational value in that it taught people how to count. I agree with this reasoning, when I was growing up, we also used the Monopoly money in our play shops, it was pivotal to how I learnt how to count, add and subtract, and generally make sure I was receiving the correct change when I would make purchases. Counting out and keeping up with the money was part of the fun of the old game as was landing on the set of jail free space and collecting lots of cash. But, like I said earlier, we live in a plastic world now.
Now, there is a central hub that helps to keep track of your money. You swipe your debit card to pay for a transaction. This plays sounds and music and requires 3AA batteries which are not included. The sound of the door slamming when you land on jail is a cool touch. The jury appears to be divided on whether Monopoly Revolution is better than the more traditional Monopoly but most appear to think it is a great game. For us older players, it does take a bit to get used to, but after a while, you get in the swing of it, and it's just like the old days again.
