After nearly four years of research Google has finally brought their Search Suggestions to the web
. Many people thought that 4 years of research on this project kept them at bay too long, but for Google, they believe that taking the time to get all the glitches ironed out before introducing it to the public was necessary. This is probably the philosophy that keeps them on top in the industry. Rather than rush the process and have tons of user complaints and problems to solve, they simply take a proactive approach to get things right the first time.Perhaps you have already noticed Google Suggest. What it basically does is that as you type something in the search bar it gives you suggestions or predicts what you are looking for; hitting on the most common things that people might look for under that topic. Although, it does offer your options to choose from, you may also choose to continue on and type exactly what it is that you intended to search for without using the suggestions.
Google is actually not the front runner on this idea, since Yahoo already added such an upgrade to their search box last year and many feel that Yahoo's Search Assist has proven to be more accurate and complete than those revealed by Google last week. This is mostly because Google's system simply uses the words that you are typing to predict the rest of what you are looking for, while Yahoo's services offers a more comprehensive understanding of the topic you are searching and suggests related topics that might be relevant to your search.
At this point in time, Google's search doesn't go that far, although there is talk about developing this feature at some point in the future.
For now both Google and their customers are happy about the Search Suggestions aspect and that it is finally available for general use. Search suggestions help reduce search times, spelling errors and in general make search inquiries more effective and this helps to make the web even more user friendly.
