Is Thinkpad X1 Carbon Worth Purchasing?

Is Thinkpad X1 Carbon Worth Purchasing?

Excellent carbon fiber but high cost

Thinner, tougher and easier to dissipate heat, carbon fiber has been proved for many years to be a better material to make shells than metal does. Yet, its price is very expensive. Generally speaking, composite materials made of carbon fiber are widely used for military use, medical treatment, rocket and airplane shells and man-made ligament. In the field for civilian use, enthusiasts of sports car sometimes adopt carbon fiber to make engine lid so as to reduce the weight of the car and to better dissipate heat. Besides, a part of minority high-end notebooks is made of carbon fiber, including Sony VAIO Z, Asus VX7 and Dale XPS 13.

Therefore, when we get to know that the head cover of ThinkPad X2 Carbon is made of carbon fiber, we cant help worrying about its cost. In fact, apart from its excessively high cost, the carbon fiber is seldom applied to consumer electronics due to its unique property. Some insiders point out that carbon fiber is mainly used in realms of aviation, military and national defense, hence it is regulated in use. If it is widely employed in fashionable consumer electronics, this might affect the need from national defense and aviation.

After consulting insiders, we learn that protofilament process and protofilament carbonization are the only two processes involved in the production process for carbon fiber. At present, Chinas bottleneck for the development of carbon fiber depends on protofilament production technology. As the protofilament takes up 50%-60% of total cost of carbon fiber, this restricts the its manufacturing cost and market competitiveness. For the above reasons, I believe that it is rather difficult for carbon fiber notebook to be popularized domestically. Aluminum alloy and high fiberglass are still the main material to make shells for mainstream ultrabooks.

Small body but large screen, along with prevalent design of ultra-narrow frame

Unlike Macbook Air pursuing ultrasone concise style, ThinkPad X1 Carbon is purely a practical business ultrabook. It not only has to make its appearance thinner and more attractive, but also has to carry forward the unique design and functions of ThinkPad.

If ThinkPad T series is regarded as a manager in business suit, then, X1 Carbon looks like a businessman dressed in jacket without wearing a tie. Its style matches the prevailing business casual style in IT industry. Moreover, the design concept for ThinkPad X1 Carbon can be described as a pair of excellent chopsticks, for when standing upside down on the table in form of half open, it looks like a chopstick owing to its wedge design.

What is worthy of mentioning is X1 Carbon is the first set of PC with drop-down hinge available. Whats more, its movable angle can stretch up to 180 while most of drop-down pivot can expand to 135 only. Its movable angle is large enough to meet usersneeds for watching the screen from specific angles.

Compared to the previous X1 notebook with 13-inch screen, the 13-inch ThinkPad X1 Carbon is installed with a 14-inch IPS display of 1600 900 resolution. Meanwhile, it adopts the prevalent design for its rim, and the internal space of both A, B facet is effectively used.

In fact, many notebooks adopt ultra-narrow design for their own frame, such as Samsung 700z and Dale XPS 13 and so on. This design which can boost user experience will become a standard for designing notebook. After all, everyone likes a notebook with a small body but big screen. As for the ultra-narrow design, it makes a notebook look more charming.

Nature and crucial design for keyboard

Similar to the ThinkPad series launched in corresponding period, the keyboard of ThinkPad X1 Carbon is in shape of island. Many old users who prefer its old design are unsatisfied with this new change. Of course, it is reasonable for them to complain about this, after all, they have been accustomed to using the old keyboard for many years and naturally like the old style.

Well, the actual performance of ThinkPad X1 Carbon is not such unacceptable as what most users think. In fact, it is still very comfortable for users to use. More importantly, it performs better than X1 with both of its obvious flexible buttons and increased contact space catering to the need for operation.

To ensure comfortable feel for tapping the keyboard and thinness of the whole ultrabook, engineers rack their brains. They apply special technology never used before to balance the inclination overlapping between the touchpad and battery. As the wedge-shaped ThinkPad X1 Carbon is strict for the material of the keyboard, designers determine to use magnesium alloy frame as the backplane of keyboard, and they apply the thin glass to make its touchpad.

Success lies in details. This is what makes X1 Carbon magnificent. Designers come across a new problem in designing C face palm, a common position: the paint on the palm is easily to fall off because sweat from users palm can permeate into the metal coating through the paint, leading to the drop of paint. To solve the problem, designers develop membrane of high resistance, that is, after painting enough primary coat on the palm to resist invasion of strong sweat, they paint finishing coat on the palm again to solve the above problem. After tests, the touchpad does turn out to resist strong acid and concentrated hydrochloric acid.

Opinions from editors: X1 Carbon in my eyes

Li Yangrun: It is within our expectation for the advent of ThinkPad ultrabook. As a late comer, X1 Carbon has integrated with many great ideas in terms of design, material and proportionality. Of course, whether its advantages can be accepted or not, we have to see the feedbacks from the market. There is no denying the fact that X1 Carbon is bloated thoroughly by TP, and some users fond of Think may be addicted to this new ultrabook. Yet, I have a rational question in my mind for Lenovo: Do you dare to sell it in a little lower price?

Angel: Well, designers do pay great efforts to design X1 Carbon. Yet, it is difficult to cater for all tastes. Many users feel unsatisfied with the design. For example, they feel disappointed at the screen ratio of 16:9 because what they expect is 16:10. For this reason, they may have to buy Mackbook instead---only Apple has such screen proportion.
