Is Breastfeeding Causing Your Baby's Gas?

Is Breastfeeding Causing Your Baby's Gas?

Does your breastfed baby seem to be getting gas more often than not after feedings, causing her pain and discomfort several times a day? Some babies seem to avoid feedings to avoid pain. Of course, the baby doesn't know it's the gas causing pain and not the feedings. Should you stop breastfeeding?

It is well accepted that breastfeeding is an excellent source of nutrition and probably the best thing for your baby. But, you must remember that everything you eat is passed to baby in breast milk. In addition, it may not be the actual breast milk causing the gas, but the technique being used to breastfeed. In short, fore milk is what baby gets when the breast is full and too much of it, without enough hind milk, that consumed when the breast is almost empty, has been shown to cause gas. Seeing a lactation specialist may aid in your breastfeeding technique and relieve the problem altogether. Properly burping baby after feeding will also help alleviate gas. Do not assume that since you are breastfeeding, baby does not need burping.

Breast milk may also be the problem if your diet contains too many gas producing foods. If the food causes gas in you, it may also be the culprit in your baby's gas. Gas producing foods include foods that are good for you like broccoli, as well as, dairy products and spicy foods. Cow's milk is difficult for infants to digest and may be the most likely culprit if you consume lots of dairy products. If after removing dairy from you diet your infant's gas improves, wait a few weeks and slowly begin adding it to your diet. As your infant matures, he or she may be able to tolerate dairy products received through your breast milk more easily.

Rest assured though that breastfeeding is an excellent method for feeding your baby and with the proper technique and a few diet changes by you, your baby's gas should subside.
