How To Deal With A Sick Baby
It is natural that children fall sick and it is the responsibility of the parents to take care of the sick children and to take appropriate measures to make their children feel safe and secure. Parents should keep the following points in mind while their children become sick at any time:
Don't get nervous and worried. If you feel confused and very anxious about the health of the child or of your absence in the office, the child will sense your mental state and get more uncomfortable. So getting worried when your child is sick is not going to improve the situation; rather it will make matters worse. It is therefore necessary to stay as calm as possible.
If you can afford it, remain with your sick child at home. In case this is not possible, find someone whom you can trust and is experienced in taking care of children to look after your child in your absence. There has to be somebody with your sick child to make the child feel secure and for your own peace of mind.
Try different methods of making the child feel comfortable. If the child likes to be carried and lulled by you, do it. A deep bath is another possibility if it is advisable under the given situation. Sometimes the child may want you to sleep with it. For the sake of the child's comfort, let the child sleep with you.
Letting the child sleep with you serves a double purpose. If the child wakes up in its sleep and finds you sleeping alongside it, the child will feel reassured of your presence, and that makes the child feel safe. On the other hand, you will have the consolation that you are with the child to provide any assistance if the child is in any difficulty.
As far as possible, don't disturb your sick child and make it feel uncomfortable by turning it this side and that side or by the use of medical equipments. If you need to take the temperature, do it in such way that the child is least disturbed. There are thermometers which can take the temperature of sick people without having to touch them. Get such a thermometer from the nearby medical store.
Let your sick child have what he likes to enjoy. Reading stories might soothe it and help it recover from the illness faster. Let it watch its favorite video, eat its favorite foodstuffs and fruits. Choose those food items which will help the child to recover from its illness fast.
If you find that the measures you have taken to soothe the sick child are not having any effect on the child, take it to a doctor for ascertaining the cause of the illness. But before you go to the doctor, tell the child that it is necessary and is for the benefit of the child that you are taking it to the doctor. Never tell it frightening stories of medical procedures. The child should see the doctor as a friend to get better results.
