What many people do not realize is that the symptoms of loss of the ability to hear come on gradually. They often take years to become noticeable and, at that time, it may be that just your family is noticing them occurring. It is a good idea for individuals to talk to their loved ones about such symptoms since most people don't know it is occurring in the first place. Why Is This Hard to Spot?
Often times, the problem with this type of loss is that it happens over a period of time. The inner ear is damaged very slightly and this builds over time. For many people, the problem occurs due to aging, hereditary factors or due to exposure to loud sounds or prolonged exposure to noise. Over time, more and more of the small nerve endings that line the eardrum become damaged. Initially, you may not notice what is occurring. Then, the problem worsens and more nerve cells are damaged. Eventually, you will not be able to hear well. In the meantime, though, you may only be unable to hear some things.
Symptoms of a Problem
Do you have some of the common symptoms of this type of loss? Some of them may include having to ask your family to repeat themselves often, the need to turn the volume up on the television and the inability to hear well over the phone. Your loved one may notice that you ask them to repeat information often. Others may be able to see that you no longer are able to hold a conversation properly.
When any or all of these symptoms are occurring, you need a hearing test. The test will provide information about what is happening and why it is occurring. It can also tell your doctors what steps you can take to get improvement so that you can hear better.
