Giving Gifts Is Essential For Japanese Business Etiquette

Share: One of the key values of Japanese business etiquette is the giving of gifts.
More so than any other country, giving gifts in Japan is critical. It is a must.
Giving gifts is a part of the culture. It is the nature of doing business in Japan.
Furthermore, giving gifts play a critical part in client relationship management. It is a very important part of Japanese business customs.
A lot of people say it isn't something you have to do. I state emphatically that they are wrong.
This is what I say: It is one step closer to success!
Your gifts should tell a story. They should lead to a conversation about you that your hosts will not forget. This is the start of marketing yourself, before you earn the right to market your products.
The Basics: There are a few points that you need to keep in mind. This is before you begin to actually select those gifts to take to Japan.
1. First, the key point: The giving of a present is of no value if it doesn't have an impact. If it is forgotten, you lost a valuable opportunity to form a lasting relationship. Make it worth it.
2. The gift must have a personal element to it. If it does, it won't get lost in the shuffle and you will be remembered.
3. The first cycle of gifts (during your initial few times to Japan) must not be about marketing your company. You are marketing yourself, first and foremost. Again: it's all about you personally so make it special!
4. Every gift must be manufactured in the area you come from. Gifts made elsewhere are too prevalent, and they normally say "I didn't care" and couldn't be bothered.
5. Gifts cannot be trinkets. They have all the ball-point-pens, mouse pads, etc., they need, even with your corporate logo!
6. Gifts should be suitably wrapped. Since you must get through customs, don't wrap them, and then have your concierge wrap them the Japanese way. Yes, there is a Japanese way, and the presentation is flawless.
7. Make sure prior to your departure that you are aware who you will be meeting. Make sure you know how many individuals will be at the appointments. Decide on whether or not you intend to give each person a gift, or to the company as a whole.
8. It is better NOT to carry with you gifts that promote a religious or political statement. You can share your beliefs in the future when you have gained their trust and they are more used to you.
These basic points will guide you through the process of taking great gifts!
I cannot impress upon you enough that this is your best way of being more endeared by your Japanese associates. It makes no difference if you seeing them on the first occasion. Or, if it is your 10th occasion.
The gift is your window into their hearts, together with that terrific personality of yours.
When doing business in Japan, giving gifts is essential to your success.
You gifts need to matter!
