Hollywood movies, rock and roll songs and classic novels have all done their share to glamourise the idea of taking a road trip across the vast, open spaces of America. There is a whole branch of the American tourism business dedicated to allowing people from other countries to share this dream of complete freedom and for just a short time at least not having to stick to someone else's schedule.

Living in such a vast country, many Americans think nothing of travelling a few hundred miles for a day trip or special event, and the presence of such an extensive network of roads makes the thought of exploring them so enticing.

Getting into that American mindset makes it far easier to open up to the possibilities of discovering and sampling the real American way of life. OK, so sitting around the campfire, singing songs while waiting for the pot to boil might be a little old hat, but there is so much of this huge country which usually remains outside the range of the more casual or package holiday visitor which travelling independently makes it possible to see.

It may be a clich to talk in terms of the lure of the open road, but no one can fail to be attracted by the prospect of swapping the day-to-day drudge of commuting for a big car, the thought of a destination several hundred miles away, and a few road maps to point the way. Touring in this way is how to discover the true spirit of America, but being weighed down by unnecessary luggage will certainly take some of the gloss off the experience.
