Looking at bad habits or children who misbehave it is not usually clear whether such occurrence comes first or it is due to poor parentage. Basing on the studies that have been carried out it is evident that parents have a great role in contributing to children delinquency. Delinquent behaviors include stealing, lying or even drug abuse. From various surveys children even affirm that some of their habits are as a result of the irresponsibility of their parents.
Children who are brought up by parents without proper parentage are more likely to be delinquent as compared to the ones that the parents are supportive. Parents can either be supportive, authoritative or permissive. Negative behaviors are mostly associated with permissive and extremely strict parents. Parenting becomes more demanding as days go by especially with the growth of a child. If children do not have any other socializing agent like school, church or other forms of social gathering then parents should be on the forefront to do so. Children who come from problematic families portray some inferiority complex or even low self-esteem and this has been a contributing factor in most of the antisocial behaviors. In addition, the many cases of child-parent conflict are attributed to the form of discipline that parents decide to use on their children. It is reported that parents who have only relied on authoritarian form of discipline are less likely to succeed when compared to parents who decide to be firm but reasoning with their children. Telling children to follow certain rules as long as they are in one's house could be detrimental since it is likely to produce rebellious children (Siegel 255).
Inconsistence in discipline is another contributing factor to children delinquency. Research portray that youths who have been reportedly shown to be misbehaved portray that the parents did not have a certain format of disciplining them. One of their ways was that they would either be too strict or too permissive. Physical punishment is one of the forms of discipline that cuts across race and ethnicity. Some say that such punishment weakens the bond between children and their parents and lowers the faith they have in justice. It is mostly practiced in African nations (Siegel 255).
Parents who have large families have also contributed to their children delinquency. Every child for him or her to grow requires adequate time yet if parents are too busy for them, then they will have a great problem in their social lives. Parents will tend to concentrate so much on provision of basic needs rather than give them enough time for guidance (Siegel 257).
Several studies have also shown that parents with deviant behaviors have contributed a lot to the delinquent behaviors of their children (Van de Rakt et al. 2009). From such parents, the effects on their children are devastating as well as long term. David Farrington a British Criminologist undertook a research on youth delinquent behaviors and he came up with various conclusions. From the research, it was evident that many youths whose fathers were criminals or had prior criminal records were chronic offenders (Simmons 1). It was only 18 percent whose fathers were not criminals and were offenders yet 37 percent had criminal fathers. It was also found out that some behaviors are intergenerational for example children who bullied others were shown to have parents who used to bully others also. Fifteen year olds with parents who engage in drug abuse are twice more likely to do so too.(Claes et al. 405). Children who were separated from their parents due to imprisonment were more likely too to be in deviant behaviors than children who were in families who were separated probably by other factors such as death or illness or even divorce.
Child abuse of any form has adverse effects. A child can be abused in several ways some of which are physical for example stabbing or throwing things at a child. Some even bite or burn their children as a form of punishment and this mostly result in children engaging in drug abuse or joining bad company to try running away from reality. Sexual abuse has been rampant in the recent past and this has adversely affected children. Children who have gone through such experiences have mental representation concerning such figures either men or women and may end up forming a negative attitude towards the same (Regoli et al. 375).
Children can also be deprived either one or both parents as a result of abandonment or illness. John Bowlby a British Psychologist carried out a research on the impact that parental absence have on children. From the research it was clear that children go through three phases (Mason 2009). Protest is the first phase and is characterized by cries and screams as a child manifests panic. Secondly, a child despairs and is shown by sucking of a thumb and withdrawing. Finally, a child detaches himself or herself from parents, he looses interests in them. According to Bowlby, when parents take too long to reunite with heir children there are deleterious consequences one of them is that a child develops an affectionless character. This character will finally lead a child to delinquent behavior. He emphasized that such may lead to prostitution in girls and stealing in boys.
