There are also ones made side by side. They come in various patterns and come with varying accessories.
Tandem ones have the children either one behind the other or face to face. Some parents swear by it because they can clear doorways easier than the side by side, but because of their length than can be a bit difficult to navigate and turn.
They are like semi trucks and do take quite a bit of movement to make simple turns. Ones that are made in the tandem fashion are sometimes built with the toddler and the baby combination in mind. So the front seat may fully recline and be a full seat, but the back seat maybe more bench like, so that an older child can ride along with baby but will not have the same needs as baby so is not provided with the same comforts this tandem option is a good choice if the older child has already reached the second birth day by the time the baby has come along.
Sides by sides are designed so that the children sit next to each other. This type is often very wide and there may be some concern about getting through doorways because of the width. The side by side is favored for twins by some parents who buy into the theory that twins feel lost without one another once they leave the womb. There are several pretty cool options for side by side that is not available with the tandem. The side by side has the option of a cover that covers both sides simultaneously to keep the babies out of the way of drafts. Some can be broken apart to become to individual stroller which is a great option when more than one person is available to push babies around. This breakaway option also helps with the doorway problem.
