but for a long-time, treatment system for drug abuse has been centered on people with minimal family involvement. Family-centered therapy for parents with substance addiction problems is mainly focused on improving individual services to women. The original objective of involving family was to have an easier access and greater results for women. From a research conducted in a residential therapy for post partum women and residential women with children, successful results were obtained when family centered treatment was created. Therapy was comprehensive and long term that lasts between 6 to 12 months.
Family treatment is defined by the Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Block Grant according to the services provided for children and women. Under family treatment, women can get thorough gender-specific treatment; obtain primary medical care for mothers; get help in parenting, case management and transportation. Pediatric and child care as well as therapeutic interventions are provided on the part of the children. From the study conducted on residential women with children and post partum women, abstinence from alcohol or drugs is relatively high with 61% of those who undergone treatment remained alcohol or drug free six months after their treatment. Employment has also increased after the treatment with 47% chance of women landing a job. The percentage of women living with partners who abuse medications are lower with only a percentage of 12. The data gathered supported the claim that treatment for women with children yields greater success when interventions are centered on both of them. Consistent abstinence and living a productive life was measured in the study and has offered better results when compared to therapy that's individualized.
There is an estimated 6 million children under the age of eighteen with at least 1 parent who is alcohol or drug dependent and 69.2% of women, 52.5% of men enrolling in drug treatment centers report of having children in the United States. Most of the community treatment services however, are in the lower levels of constant care. There is still much to be done when it comes to treatment that involves the whole family. Family involvement also has its challenges since every member of the family has his own needs and behavior. Funding for a family treatment approach is still also a challenge. Despite these challenges, the ultimate goal of consistency in abstinence of drug or alcohol abuse is what makes family therapy a worthwhile endeavor.
