So yes, you see, having a social life not only benefits you, but also your child. Spending almost every second thinking of your kids, tending to their needs and essentially focusing on your children and nothing else isn't a good thing, for you and for your kids.
The best advice? Go out there and spend some ME time. If however, you feel that you are 100% ready for a new romance then go ahead! A mature adult wouldn't completely feel whole if she's not able to share her life with someone, a partner for life. With that stated, relationships, romantic, platonic are highly encouraged.
But let's face it, dating is more challenging for single mums compared to single ladies without kids. They aren't problems but rather challenges that you need to overcome. The biggest challenge you should face is with your kids. Lansky states, "Be aware, too, that children are usually more accepting of dad's dating than of mom's dating. You might say that it is kind of sexist when people say that a mum's role would just stay at home, tend the house and watch over the kids; the status quo of a typical housewife role." Well, that does bite a bit, doesn't it?
BUT, there are some moves that you need to do to make your children accept the reality of you dating again.
First, prepare them by talking to them honestly about the situation. Let them understand that they are still number one and that you love them very much, but also, you need a partner who you can also share your feelings and love with.
Also, talk to them about dating, and ask yourself first if your children are ready for a new man in their lives, then gently explain your reasons on why you want to take on Single Parent dating again.
Second, you should acknowledge their fears and concerns. Don't tell them that they are being scared of losing you, because, yes, it is a fact that children do feel that they are losing their single mums when they start dating again. Assure them that they are still the your priority by spending time with them and being open with them. As much as you may be tempted to stay in front of the computer to browse through promising personals, always remember that your children's needs come first. And lastly, be understanding. In a child's point of view, a new guy is someone that would be a rival to your affections. So, please understand when your children throw tantrums and fits when you introduce a new guy for the first time. You may also expect bouts of unusual rudeness and pettiness. Your children would always want your attention and they'd go as far as to "sabotage" your online dating relationships.
