Colic And Babies - How can you help him?

Flushed with excitement upon bringing home your newborn baby soon turns to anxiety and stress when your baby doesn't stop crying. Why do babies cry and what are you supposed to do about it?

Babies' cries are at a certain pitch. They are designed to draw your attention and raise your blood pressure. You may feel like they are only crying to keep you from getting a decent night's rest. Here we will examine why babies cry and what you are supposed to do with a crying baby.

Babies usually cry for 1 or 2 hours daily. The poor little mites have no other method of communication at this early stage. A baby when he/she is crying does not show either something wrong has been done by you to the baby as a mother or that you are not a good mother. As time goes by, you will better understand your baby and be able to determine what they want just by the sounds and gestures they make. Until you are able to recognise the different signs it is best to work your way through a list of possible reasons for his screaming.

Is he hungry? He may have had his last feed less than an hour ago but his needs change on a daily basis. Offer him some milk and then see what happens.

Does his nappy need changing? Imagine sleeping in a wet or otherwise dirty diaper, wouldn't that cause you to complain loudly? A quick change may resolve the issue.

Has he got wind? When put to bed too quickly after eating he may have gas, and everyone knows what a bad feeling this can be. It might work to rub or pat his back gently while holding him in an upright position.

Is the child alone or frightened ? Your baby has been kept warm and safe inside you for 9 months. He has been in darkness in a very warm and soothing place. How does this compare to his nursery? He has become used to the shhhing noises (or white noise) Situated in your womb and the limited space. Cuddling your baby helps to recreate the restricted space by holding him in your arms. You can also achieve this by swaddling.

You may want to try swaddling your baby before putting him down to sleep. Make sure there's some noises in the nursery to make him comfortable. You have two options, hold the baby and make calming noises or purchase a noise machine to calm the baby down.

Is he too hot or cold? This is very important in infants. Does he appear uninterested and awake? If the child is awake, he would need something to keep amused. This could be a mobile placed above his cot or it could just mean he needs someone to stimulate him. Try talking to him and carrying him around with you for a while.

You will learn that different pitches mean different things and you will be able to respond to him accordingly. It's only going to get better.
