Co2 Fire Extinguisher Guide

Share: Among the different types of fire extinguishers
, the CO2 fire extinguisher is perhaps the most versatile and therefore the most commonly used type of fire extinguisher - able to deliver in a good number of fire emergency situations, readily available in fire safety supply distributors and relatively affordable for a one time payment for one's safety. While a CO2 extinguisher can be used for the majority of most domestic and commercial fires, make sure that you obtain the right kind of fire extinguisher suitable for your home or establishment.
Different types of fire extinguishers carry different chemical compositions and are therefore used in different situations & applications. So why choose a CO2 fire extinguisher over other types? Well a very good reason is in modern man's growing reliance on technology and therefore electronics. This type of fire extinguisher unlike a water based or foam based extinguisher, can effectively put out a flaming electric generator. At the same time, CO2 extinguishers can also put out minor flaming pieces of cloth, carpet or curtain which commonly get caught in fires at home and petroleum products such as crawling flame from car gas leaks.
If the time ever comes that a person will have to operate a CO2 extinguisher, or any other extinguisher or firefighting tool for that matter, make sure he/she informs all parties within the vicinity first. This way, people can have a good idea and grasp of what to do. Of course, calling the fire department is a must. All establishments provided if they are in compliance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (FSO), have the legal obligation to provide their establishments with fire safety measures. This means fire alarms, fire blankets, fireproofing and the like.
Remember before using the CO2 fire extinguisher that while it works in a good number of situations, there are a few cases to be noted. For one, it does well in putting out flammable liquids such as a grasscutter leak. It also works well with electronics - fans, appliances and other objects that set on fire due to electricity. While it will put out the fires on desktop computers and laptops, this is not advisable unless the flame is truly threatening, as it causes permanent damage. However, it works only moderately well on paper and carton and very little on flames caused by hot cooking oil or fat in commercial kitchens.
Once you have decided that a CO2 extinguisher is good for putting out a certain fire, then simply pull out the plastig tag, position the discharge horn at a 90 degrees angle towards the fire. Since a canister is about 2-5 kilograms, make sure you support it well with your body. Spray the foam out using the nozzle - being careful not to touch the foam spewing out at any given time. Use this ONLY for small fires. For bigger fires, it would be best to evacuate an area and to call the local fire department and / or activate the fire alarm.
