Business Ethics = Gas Station Nachos

Business Ethics = Gas Station Nachos

After stopping bythe local convenience store forfuel and leaving with an enormoustray

of nachos complete with cheese-likeliquid, chili thatcould only be described as "warm" and "brown-ish", and pickled jalapeos, my 10-year-old boy and I proceeded to consumeaforementioned nachos in a matter of 2.15 minutes.

"I'msick from thenachos," he said looking at mewith eyes that said"why did we eat that?"

I couldn't come up with a reasonable answer as to why we had eaten them. The nachosdidn't contain nutritional value (quite the opposite), we weren't hungry at the time, and thedough we haddropped on them could have gone toward something of greater value, like a bar of soap.

Why do human beings feel that if weare able todo something, we should; withoutworrying about consequences or how absurdly unnecessary it may be?

In the world of business, it's sacrilege to ignore the philosophy of "more".

If yourcompanycan charge a client more, why not.

If you can pay a vendor less, do it?

If cutting corners for cheaper, quickerservice and products canmake yourbottom line expand, heythat's money in the bank.

Somany companies have lost pridein delivering an honest product for a fair price.Certain industries have become a havenfor lax standards, where quality control measures are second to price, and undercutting your competition is the biggesttactic for sales.

Ifmy boy and I had gone to an establishmentthat took some pride in delivering an honest, freshly prepared plate of delicious nachos--using only the finest ingredients(and notskimping on toppings)--all while adhering to health safetypractices and food handling standards; wemost likelywouldn't have been filled with regret (and possible salmonella).

This observation is particularlyimportant when it comes to translation services companies. If afirm worries more about the dollar amount instead ofaccepting huge projects withimpossible deadlines, only trying to get the job done as fast and cheapas possible using machines or unreliable and inexperiencedtranslators for a better rate, everyone except theboss (who is profiting the most) suffers.

Like myself and the boy, clientsusing companies that employ less than ethical practices with translation services willundoubtedlybe filled with regret when theyreceive a document translation that gets them fired, instead of promoted.

On the other hand, there isless chance of salmonella...
