Business Ethics: Do They Change In A Down Economy?

? With the economy in the state it is in today, many people are not able to leave such a terrible job.
Moreover, many individuals are forced to take lower end sales or collections jobs where lying, deception and outright swindling of customers can be an everyday occurrence. Others may end up in customer service jobs where they are required to enforce company policies that are unethical or unjust. If this sounds like you, here are a few pieces of advice.
Keep Your Personal Ethics:
The most important thing to do is not engage in the unethical behavior. Make it clear to those around you there are things you will not do and tell them why. Keep your personal standards but do not be too preachy or bossy.
The best example you can set is with your behavior not by preaching to others. Keep following your personal ethics even when others try to get you to do otherwise. Remember if adults can see why lying or cheating is wrong no amount of preaching from you will change their minds.
A good rule of thumb is to never get too chummy with an individual who is engaging in unethical behavior. Keep your distance from such people and let them live your own lives. This can be difficult especially when such people try to make friends with you but it is usually the best course of action.
Remember that people who lie to others will probably lie to you sooner or later. Such people will never be your friends.
Another thing to remember is to not let your job become your life. Get involved in outside activities such as religion, community groups, family and hobbies. Keep your mind on what is important.
Finally, do not stay at job where the activity engaged in is illegal or actually hurts someone no matter how much you need the money. Staying in such work will never be worth the money you make from it.
Honesty Is The Best Customer Service Policy:
The best customer service policy around is the simplest and easiest to implement: honesty. Be honest with your customers and you will win their respect, their trust and more importantly their business.
Ask yourself would you do business with anybody who lied to you or tried to deceive you? If the answer is no, then you know why honesty is the cornerstone of all effective customer service. The way to win to customers is to win their trust.
Make Honesty Your Customer Service Policy
This means you should take a look at your customer service policies and eliminate anything that encourages you to lie to or deceive your customers. Unfortunately many customer service experts and books actually recommend policies that lead to lying and deception.
The worst of these is the idiotic saying: "the customer is always right." Since there is no way that every customer is always right the only way to implement this advice would be to lie to your customers. In the real word, customers are often wrong so you will have to learn how to tell them they are wrong.
If you can not do something for a customer such as fill an order or meet their requirements come out and say so. If the customer asks you to do something you know you can not do come out and say so.
A few customers may get upset at this but customers will appreciate the honesty. Instead of telling the customer that you can do something you can not do for them offer them an alternative.
Another good piece of advice is to try and explain why you can not do something for a customer. In many customers may not be aware that you are incapable of doing something or that their request is impossible. Explaining the situation can help the customer make a more realistic choice that you can satisfy.
One final piece of advice you will never be able to please every customer. Only do what you can not and do not promise the impossible.
