Each team in the National Football League has a diehard group of fans who know virtually everything there is to know about the team
. These fans know what year the team was founded, the past members who have made the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the stats of all the players on this season's squad. Many of those fans also know a fair amount about the coaching staff.Even with all of their knowledge, though, these fans often overlook a set of very important people for the team: those in the front office. The Buffalo Bills have a group of men in their Player Personnel department who make sure those with Buffalo Bills tickets have an unforgettable experience every season. Below is a little about a few of them.
Buddy Nix, Executive Vice President/General Manager: Buddy Nix is a relatively new addition to the Bills, but he brings years of NFL experience. His latest stint with the Bills is also his second with the team. Nix played linebacker and fullback while at Livingston University (now West Alabama University). Upon graduation, he started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of Alabama in 1961. Over the next several years, he coached high school teams in Alabama and Georgia.
He then returned to the college ranks and coached at Louisiana State, Auburn, Southern Mississippi, Carson Newman and his alma mater. From 1984 to 1992, he was the head coach at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. His career in the NFL started the next year as an Area Scout for the Buffalo Bills. He remained in that position until he became the Director of Player Personnel for the San Diego Chargers in 2001. He added Assistant GM to his title in 2003. He returned to the Buffalo Bills as a National Scout in 2009 and became the GM in 2010.
Doug Whaley, Assistant General Manager/Director of Pro Personnel: The 2010 season marks Whaley's first in his position with the Bills. He was a standout safety and linebacker for the University of Pittsburgh in the early 1990s. He started his career in the National Football League in 1995 as the Pro Personnel Assistant for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He transitioned to the East Coast Area College Scout for the Seattle Seahawks in 1996. He returned to the Steelers in 1999 as their Pro Scouting Coordinator. In the decade he held that position, the Steelers made multiple trips to the playoffs and took home two Super Bowl trophies.
Tom Modrak, Vice President of College Scouting: Like Whaley, Modrak also has history with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania for undergrad and University of West Virginia for graduate school. He has been inducted into both the Indiana University Hall of Fame and the Western Pennsylvania Hall of Fame. He was a part-time scout in 1973 for the Steelers and then started working with a scouting service company. He was a Pro Scout with the Steelers from 1979-1986. He eventually worked his way to the Director of Pro Scouting. Before joining the Bills in 2001, Modrak also worked for the Philadelphia Eagles.
