Perhaps not every restaurant has one, but a Chef's Table is a table situated within the kitchen of the restaurant. What makes this table unique? It's like real estate: location, location, location.
By virtue of where it sits (in the kitchen), the table allows guests to see how their food is being prepared, observe communication among the kitchen staff, and generally experience the inner workings of a busy restaurant kitchen. The uniqueness of the experience is what makes this auction item popular at benefit auction fundraisers.
Consider how popular cooking shows have become. Allowing guests a peek at what happens inside a restaurant kitchen has become a common theme for several reality TV programs. The Chef's Table seats your guests in that kitchen.
And let's face it: It's always nice to go out for a good meal. But dining out becomes a more fascinating experience when you are enjoying your meal literally in the middle of the hustle and bustle of a busy, professional kitchen. It puts a new spin on the experience. You'll be dining "in" the kitchen but "out" of your house.
Sometimes a restaurant will fill the Chef's Table when the restaurant is at capacity. Other times the table might be left vacant unless a special customer arrives.
Several years ago while attending a conference in Pittsburgh, PA, a group of us walked over to the South side for a meal at an Italian restaurant. I have since forgotten the name of the restaurant, but I haven't forgotten the experience.
The restaurant was full of customers, and the only table available to accommodate our group was the Chef's Table in the kitchen. "Could we seat you there," the hostess asked.
"Not at all!" we replied.
We were ecstatic. We got to enjoy a fabulous meal and have a unique view of the restaurant which no one else did.
Next time you are dining at your favorite mid-to-upscale restaurant, ask if they have a Chef's Table. Then, when it comes time to solicit for donations from your preferred restaurants, ask if they would be so kind as to donate a dinner at that Chef's Table. The advantage of doing so is that it is a better donation for your charity, but it doesn't "cost" the restaurant any additional money.
