Baby Layettes in the 1920's as Compared to Today
A layette from the 1920's is far different from what it is today. Both the styles and fabrics were very different.
In the 1920's, a layette would include long flannel gowns where the bottom opening was folded up over the front and tied or buttoned in place. These worked nicely for keeping the baby's feet warm. Sometimes these long flannel gowns were called barracoats. For night the long gowns were made of wool. Also included in the layette would be several long gowns, going well beyond the baby's feet. Day or night, a woolen undershirt would be worn under these gowns.
They usually had knitted shawls for extra warmth. Of course there would be several knitted booties and wool bonnets. Another item that was include in any good layette were several binders. These were wide bands that were wrapped around the baby's torso and tied.
There is no doubt that several blankets would be needed and sometimes a blanket would be turned into a sleepsack, which is basically like a sleeping bag.
Diapers were usually made of Turkish toweling. There were no plastic or rubber pants back then. Instead they used a diaper cover made of wool flannel, as extra protection.
Today's layette includes the ever popular onesie. A minimum of 6, but better to have 12, as these are often the basis of a baby's outfit. They come in long and short sleeves. A sleeper is another must. These have long sleeves, legs, and usually feet. One type has a zipper going from one foot up to the neck opening. Another type has snaps on both inner legs and up the front to the neck.
Two piece outfits are also great. They may be a t-shirt and pants or a t-shirt and overalls or jumper. A jacket or sweater, booties, socks, and caps or bonnets are definitely needed, especially in the colder climates. A snowsuit might even be in order.
Lightweight receiving blankets are used for a variety of jobs. A light cover over the baby, a "protector" under the baby, or even burp clothes. Heavier weight blankets may be knitted, crocheted, or quilted.
Lastly, diapers. These my be cotton cloth diapers or disposable diapers. Whichever the mom decides to use, she will need at least 2 dozen, but 4 dozen would be better. And also diaper covers. There are many styles of diaper covers and the mom will need to decide which type she feels will be best for her and her baby.
Though layettes have transformed over the decades, their purposes have remained unchanged.
