Baby 6 Months Old - Such A Change!

Once your baby reaches the age of six months they are now well on their way to becoming a more lively being. The once quiet and stationary newborn is now learning new things each and every day. A baby six months old will need more space and a great deal of your time for active play. At this age, the baby will commence to show what they have learned and will explore things around them using their new skills.

A baby 6 months old is at a stage where they can start eating new foods if they have not started them already. Some parents start with cereals and first stage baby foods at four months. If you have yet to start, 6 months is a good time to get them going. By now you may notice they watch you eat with great interest, and you will notice they want to try it too. As long as they can sit with assistance, they are old enough to start. Make sure you start a new food and then wait four days before starting a different one in the event they have a reaction. This allows you to know which food caused a problem.

There are many exciting things for your baby right now including their food. This is also the month most likely to see your baby sit on their own and gain a whole new perspective on the world around them. If you are concerned that your baby is not sitting up on their own yet, bear in mind that some babies require to master this skill. Practice sessions for sitting are helpful. Attempt to sit them up and let them go, with your hands very near them in case they wobble and fall. Prop your baby to help them get used to this new position. Remember that it might be quite difficult for them to keep balance at first, but they will learn.

Most babies are learning to crawl close to this age, although not all. Crawling is your baby's first technique of getting around capably on their own, and a baby of six months old should show some signs of desire to get moving. Your baby will gradually learn to move confidently, so make sure they get lots of time on their bellies in order for them to push up with their arms. Some babies will bend their back with their legs in the air, which may look as if not working to crawling. But they will soon figure out how to move forward by pushing their feet on the floor. Make sure to motivate them and allow them on the floor more frequently.

A baby 6 months old should also be trying to talk to you. They can not yet say words, but they should be mimicking sounds in an effort to communicate. Some babies mimic coughs and even sneezes to get your attention. They should be saying some simple sounds while they are babbling. Encourage them by repeating what they are saying and talk to them often. This helps greatly with language development. If your baby is not babbling or making any noises, talk to your pediatrician about having a hearing test done.
