Menstruation, which is also known as monthly bleeding, menses, menstrual period, period, and menstrual course, is referred to as a tissue and blood shedding time stage in a female's life, which happens from the lining of the womb via vagina. The process occurs once a month during the reproductive years of a woman. The reason why women and girls face menses is the inability of a woman or girl to get pregnant in the few weeks before start of bleeding. It is not harmful as it is not a form of bleeding that happens due to a wound, cut, or injury. The average menstrual period cycle is of 2-7 days and primarily of 5 days. The reason why menstruation happens month after month is because the female body gets ready to be pregnant every month (menstrual cycle). But, a woman can get pregnant only on specific days of this cycle. If an intercourse does not happen during these days, she does not get pregnant and menstruation happens due to lack of it. However, this cycle halts when a female gets pregnant. The most fertile period for a woman having a 28-day menstrual cycle is between 8 to 15th day of each cycle. Girls start experiencing menstrual cycle when they attain the age of 11 years, the menstrual cycle may even begin at the age of 16 years in some girls. If it goes beyond the 16th year, qualified medical advice must be immediately sought. Doctor's advice should also be sought if the duration of period is of more than 7 days.
